Frequently asked questions about our stainless-steel drainage systems
Do channel drains need a fall?
A fall, a term for having the stainless steel floor drainage channels installed on a slight slope, allows water to drain freely and prevents pooling and stops silt and debris building up. A fall is not essential as they can be installed on a level surface, but it is recommended.
Where does the water go in a channel drain?
Water collected in the stainless-steel drainage system flows through the channels, which connect to an underground drainage system, and away from your site with the rest of your wastewater.
Do channel drains need a trap?
Channel drains don’t necessarily need a trap, but they are recommended to stop dirt and debris buildup. Traps are required for specific applications, such as when the drain connects to a combined sewer system, the trap will stop nasty smells and odours coming from the sewers entering your property.
What is the lifespan of a drainage channel?
Depending on the location of the channel and the level of maintenance you give your drainage systems, a John Lord/Aspen drainage system can last anywhere from 20 to 100 years.
How deep should a channel drain be?
A channel drain should be deep enough to fit the drain unit, plus extra room for the base and foundations. Usually, channels are 150mm–200mm deep, and the top of the grate must sit 2mm–3mm below the final surface level to allow water to drain into the channel efficiently.
What is the purpose of a drainage channel?
Drainage channels allow wastewater and debris to flow away from your premises, preventing standing water and erosion.
