John Lord has been involved in two resin floor projects for the Royal Air Force, one at RAF Alconbury and the other at RAF Coningsby.

The first was an exciting project with the MOD to create a new state of the art Typhoon Maintenance Facility at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

The project, costing a total of £18m, was the result of seven years planning, with the proposed site stretching 36 metres along the tarmac. The ten bay Maintenance Facility, which now houses the Eurofighter Typhoon, covers 10,700 square metres and needs 207 people to operate it at full capacity.

The resin flooring requirements within this facility included the installation of a heavy-duty and long-lasting floor finish that would provide a safe working surface in wet and dry conditions.  John Lord installed Uragard HT110W polyurethane resin throughout the hangar to fulfil these requirements. A bespoke military blue/grey colour was formulated by John Lord for the hangar floor. John Lord also installed Aspen Stainless bespoke inspection hatches and service ducts.

The second project at RAF Alconbury was a complete refurbishment of the onsite Commissary to revive its dated appearance and offer a lighter brighter place to shop on the US Air Force base in Cambridge.

The American-style supermarket required a new seamless resin screed that could be easily cleaned and would be attractive and decorative. The John Lord team excavated the old, worn tiled floor and replaced it with an Acrigard QS (Screed Quartz) floor in a sand colour. Matching coved skirting was installed to complete the project.

“These world-class facilities demonstrate the MOD’s determination to ensure that multi-role RAF Typhoon squadrons can meet their operational commitments backed up by efficient and cost-effective support arrangements. I applaud the effort of all concerned to keep the programme on time and on budget.”
Quentin Davies, The Minister for Defence Equipment and Support
