After heavy rain caused significant flood damage to the Arts Centre at Aberystwyth University, a completely new flooring system was needed.

John Lord Specialist Flooring was awarded the contract for the highly technical job. The project was completed as a one-stop shop, with John Lord working directly with the university and managing sub-contractors and manufacturers where needed. A specification for the repairs was agreed that provided the University with a guarantee on the repaired floor and new floor finish installation.

The flood, in August 2020 completely destroyed the timber flooring at the University’s Arts Centre. On removing the timber flooring, several additional issues were identified; it exposed areas of asbestos-containing materials and a crumbling sand and cement substrate.

With the asbestos removed and disposed of by a specialist contractor, the John Lord team got to work breaking out the damaged sand and cement substrate. Over 40 tons of damaged and unsafe material were removed in total.

The floor then needed a complete re-screed. To start, the newly broken out floor was first case hardened using Fastrac primer, a specialist product from John Lord. Next, specialist screeds and primers from F Ball and Co and a specialist pump screeding team were brought in.

Finally, the John Lord team returned to detail finish the preparation, and install a made to order specialist rubber floor from Nora Flooring.

The project was completed over a 6 week period and a total of 1400m2 of flooring was installed.
